Transfer deadline day: Jose Mourinho wanted a centre-half... so why hasn't he got one?

Reports suggest that the Portuguese manager had four targets in mind to allay his defensive concerns this summer.

Mina could potentially be on his way to Everton, while Harry Maguire appears to have been priced out of an Old Trafford switch by a stubborn Leicester.

Jerome Boateng rejected United personally, saying that he felt the club wouldn't fully commit to him if they only signed him on loan.

Alderweireld will most probably sit out the penultimate year of his Spurs' contract before his £25m release clause becomes active next summer.

The Uruguayan and Atletico have been approached by United and, being older than the rest of the targets at 32, he would presumably come at lower cost than the £80m-rated Maguire and the £50m that Bayern Munich wanted for Boateng.

Stay tuned to see how that move unfolds.
